Welcome to my world and the idea behind a Virtual Assistant business!
A little bit more about me and a business that now is...
Hi there! Jen here, the owner and creator of JENNA Administrative Services, a new Virtual Assistant business based on the northside of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The idea behind me starting my business was to create a Virtual Assistant/administrative service to help businesses and individuals with those pesky and annoying administrative tasks that time can restrict from getting done!
My main background is in administration and accounts (even though I did change careers for while!) and I did many various roles for around 12 years, so when I found this idea of starting myself up as a Virtual Assistant, I figured why not put those skills to good use and create something where I can help people to achieve what they need to achieve while also making some money and helping to grow myself. I am also basically doing this anyway, as among all the other things I do, run that side of my husband's business and have done since it started 4 years ago (which has helped me to find a love of small business).
The purpose of this blog and those that follow? - to share with you a bit about me, a bit about my business and why it started, maybe delve a little more into the world of a Virtual Assistant, maybe delve a little more into what it takes to start a business (when you have an idea and really not much knowledge on how to really start!) and maybe just talk about some random stuff as well (you will find that I am good at that!).
Why a Virtual Assistant?
Truth be told, I didn't really know that a VA was a thing, let along a career opportunity! Mum used to do typing for people as part of the computer business that my parent's had when I was growing up. She had some pretty loyal clients too, who used to come back time and time again which I thought was pretty cool and I used to give her a hand occasionally, as I had done typing and some basic admin at school.
So when I was thinking of doing something along the lines of starting my own business, I thought that maybe I could start out along the lines of what she used to do. Times have changed, but there are still people out there that need typing and resumes done, right?
When you have an idea and you want to investigate it a bit further, where do you turn? Yep - straight to good ol' google! That is exactly where I found my business idea!!
And what did I find? Not only did I find that the old typing business that Mum used to have in a revamped kind of way, I found an idea that, with my background and love of learning, was something that I could possibly do! - I also found courses on how to get started! Courses for new business starter dummies like me, with templates and lists on what you need to do! It was like one of those OMG moments where I wondered where this had been all of my life!!
So then...why start a blog?
Do you ever just write? Or type? I used to. In my old life I used to write a lot. Then computers came along and I found that it was easier to type out what was in my head (gee I sound old, don't I?) In fact, I had wanted to be a writer since primary school. That's right - year 3! Did I ever get there? There is still time I guess! But no, I haven't yet. I ended up applying to university to study journalism when I finished high school - was even accepted... But, I think the universe at that time had different plans for me. I have never lost that passion for words and the English language though!
Fast forward to today (and to save you from a very long and maybe not so interesting story about my life!) and I have found this thing called blogging - that I actually know very little about - but I am jumping straight into it. You know that job that you start where they throw you in head first and you have to learn on the spot what you have to do? That's me - that is exactly how I like to learn!
But what does all that have to do with a Virtual Assistant business? Well, why not?! My absolute favourite saying is that you should do what makes your soul happy and that is what I am trying to do. I feel strongly that if you are wanting to do something, you should love it. It's only taken me my over 40 years to work that one out... It is quite funny the way you can find positives in every situation if you look hard enough!
But again, what does this have to do with a Virtual Assistant business?! Apparently, every Virtual Assistant needs a blog! And blogging is actually also a service I can offer! Did you know that? It was new to me too, but when I saw that that's something I could do, I have no shame in admitting I got a bit excited! So why not throw myself into it? Fancy actually making a career off something you absolutely love to do - I know, crazy right!!
I think it is important to tap into your passions, whatever they may be. I truly do feel that I have started to find mine, some I think have always been there, but just hiding and waiting there for me to feel ready to express them. I have my passion for writing, I have also found a passion (as boring as it might sound!) for administration and for small business (that one was helped along by my husband's business, but we don't need to give him any credit! Oh, ok, maybe just a little...) and for helping small business. I have even found a passion in helping people compile or update their resumes - everyone has different things happening in their lives at different times and it's not until you delve deeper that you find that most people just need that little bit of help to move forward.
I am also very proud to tell you that, just this morning I had the most lovely review left for me on my business page! I am so happy to be starting my business my way...
In conclusion...
Thank you for tuning in and if you made it this far, learning a bit more about me and more about the behind the scenes and the idea behind JENNA and a business that now is...
